Brewster, NY — March 3, 2025 — This month, New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) energized a new 345kV/115kV 280 MVA transformer that will add to the grid’s reliability, resiliency, and ability to meet future energy demands. This addition will harden the grid for 35,000 customers across the Company’s Brewster division, which includes portions of Dutchess, Putnam, and Westchester Counties, contributing to NYSEG’s mission of investing in the communities it serves.
“We are continuously investing in our energy grid to ensure safe and reliable service to our customers and meet the growth in demand for residents, businesses, and industry,” said Gerald M. Deyo, project unit manager for NYSEG.
Substation transformers play an important role in power substations. Their function is to step down voltage to transmission, sub-transmission, and distribution voltages to ensure the safe and economic supply of electricity. Having an additional transformer makes the station more resilient to
power outages. It also increases the energy capacity for future load growth.

Additional enhancements to the substation configuration and linked substations were made in conjunction with the transformer addition to improve security, protection, and switching control.
These improvements create adaptability for faster recovery time from storms and other events, creating a safer and more secure grid.
“I applaud NYSEG’s continued improvements to local infrastructure that will benefits thousands of customers,” said New York Assemblyman Matt Slater. “Safety and reliability are paramount to the future of our grid and the actions taken by NYSEG help us accomplish this goal.”
