NYSEG and RG&E Donate $275,000 to Food Banks Across New York
Donation part of company’s effort to support COVID-19 response
BINGHAMTON, NY — April 16, 2020 — NYSEG, an AVANGRID company, today announced that it has donated $50,000 – the equivalent of 150,000 meals – to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier to support the Food Bank’s ongoing response to the COVID-19 situation. The donation is part of a $2 million commitment by NYSEG’s parent company, AVANGRID, to support national and local programs that are assisting those impacted by COVID-19.
“While the company has taken a number of steps to put customers first and assist those impacted by the ongoing situation, supporting local organizations such as the Food Bank is an important step in caring for the communities we serve,” said Carl A. Taylor, President and CEO of NYSEG and RG&E.
Established in 1981, the Food Bank’s mission is to alleviate hunger and eliminate food waste. As a result, the Food Bank provides more than 11 million pounds of food each year, working with more than 160 agencies. With an expansive service territory, the organization provides assistance to 6 counties in the Southern Tier, including: Broome, Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga and Tompkins counties.
“Food Bank of the Southern Tier and our network of agencies are currently seeing a more than fifty percent increase in need throughout the Southern Tier, including many newcomers. We are extremely grateful for NYSEG’s partnership and very generous support during this critical time in our community,” said Natasha Thompson, Food Bank of the Southern Tier President and CEO.
In addition to the $50,000 donation to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, the company announced additional contributions to regional food banks in Western NY, Rochester, Central NY and Northeastern NY. The company previously announced last month that it, along with sister company, RG&E, had donated 17,700 N95 and surgical masks to the state’s COVID-19 response effort to assist health care workers on the front lines. The company also announced a number of steps it has taken to assist customers that have suffered financial hardships as a result of the virus.
