BINGHAMTON, NY — October 4, 2024 — New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) made significant progress throughout the day Friday in restoration efforts to ensure the safe delivery of natural gas service to customers in the Elmira division. Natural gas customers in Schuyler County experienced a gas outage Thursday afternoon due to an external party, without a NY UDig ticket, damaging the gas main. This impacted 453 customers in the Montour Falls area.

The Company continues to make progress in restoration efforts. Approximately 251 customers have had natural gas services reconnected. NYSEG technicians made repairs Thursday and went door-to-door to disconnect the gas service at the meter. Field technicians spent Friday revisiting homes to safely relight natural gas appliances. Crews have made first and second attempts to all customers impacted. For customers not home at the time of a field visit, a door hanger was placed on the customer’s door to schedule a time to reconnect service. Customers can call the Elmira Natural Gas Department at 585.484.2633 to request reconnection.

The Company is working to restore gas service as quickly as possible. NYSEG shifted resources across its service divisions to help in restoration efforts. More than 40 gasfitters are helping reconnect service for customers. Crews will remain available until all impacted customers are restored.

To ensure safety, field personnel are utilizing the assistance of local fire and police departments. In the event of a gas emergency or if you smell gas, customers should contact NYSEG at 800.572.1121 or 911 from a safe location. Customers should also ensure CO detectors work properly and replace batteries as needed.
