NYSEG Converts City of Lockport’s Street Lights to LED

New lights to use approximately 50 percent less energy 

LOCKPORT, NY — November 16, 2021 — New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) and the city of Lockport recently collaborated to bring new LED lighting systems to the city’s street lights. Crews began work in October 2021 to convert more than 1,900 street lights to the LED systems, which use approximately 50 percent less energy. These conversions are part of a broader effort by NYSEG to work with local municipalities to replace older “cobra head” style lighting to newer and more energy efficient LED systems.
 
“We are appreciative of the partnership with NYSEG on the city's LED conversion, which is an efficient solution to improve road safety, save energy and reduce maintenance costs,” said Michelle Roman, mayor of the city of Lockport. “Our city streets are brighter and safer for our residents with the professional installation of LED lights by NYSEG. This conversion is better for the environment as it reduces energy use, improves our financial stability with lower energy costs and is aesthetically more appealing in looks as well as for the streets and sidewalks they light up.”

The conversion project in the city of Lockport brings potential energy savings to the municipality as well as several other benefits including increased efficiency, streetscape modernization and more direct lighting to the roadways. The project included work on 295 streets to upgrade all NYSEG-owned cobra head street lights within city limits.

“The city of Lockport has been an incredible partner for this project, which is the second-largest conversion NYSEG has completed since the program began in 2019,” said Mark Stifter, NYSEG key account manager. “We are pleased to be able to provide the community and its residents increased reliability, improved efficiency and potential cost savings through LED street lights.”

Overall, NYSEG has converted a total of approximately 47,700 cobra head street lights to efficient LED lights in more than 297 municipalities in its service area across New York state as part of the conversion program.
