Energy Efficiency Rebate Programs: Trade Ally Information

The information here is for trade allies – plumbing and heating contractors – regarding NYSEG's energy efficiency rebate programs.

The purpose of these rebates is to encourage customers to purchase and install higher efficiency equipment, thereby reducing overall energy consumption and encouraging wise energy use. Residential customers can click here for program information.

Residential Natural Gas Equipment Rebate Program
NYSEG and RG&E residential natural gas customers who install qualifying natural gas equipment (furnaces, boilers and indirect water heaters) and related control equipment
(boiler reset controls and programmable thermostats) on or after July 1, 2009 may be eligible for rebates.

Program Requirements
To be eligible for rebates, furnaces and boilers must be Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) or Energy STAR® approved. To determine if yourequipment qualifies, view the AHRI and Energy STAR® Web sites.

  • Heat Loss Load Calculation: Since properly sized heating equipment operates more efficiently and results in greater occupant comfort, you are strongly encouraged to perform a proper building heat loss calculation and to size the new heating equipment accordingly.
Natural gas furnaces must meet the following criteria to qualify for the incremental “Furnace with ECM” rebate:
  • Meets AFUE rating and
  • Is certified in the AHRI directory and includes a footnote indicating “ECM MOTOR 'e' Electrically Efficient Furnace” or
  • Manufacturer’s spec sheet specifically states that the furnace includes an ECM.  Including this spec sheet with rebate applications should facilitate rebate processing.
In the event that applications are processed and incremental ECM rebates amounts are denied, the customer may appeal the rebate administrator’s determination by providing a copy of the manufacturer’s spec sheet that demonstrates existence of an ECM built into the furnace in question. Final determination is the responsibility of the rebate administrator.

Duct Sealing Rebate Information
NYSEG/RG&E residential natural gas customers may also be eligible for rebates on duct sealing when they buy and install a qualifying high-efficiency natural gas furnace.

Rebate Requirements

  • The duct sealing rebate applies only to duct systems located entirely in unconditioned spaces such as unheated garages, crawl spaces or attics.
  • The work must be completed on or after July 1, 2009 by a qualified contractor.
  • Duct sealing rebate applications submitted with pretest leakages of less than 21% or greater than 60% will be rejected.
  • An accepted formula we recommend to use in determining system heating airflow capacity for duct sealing is:
Furnace output rating in BTUs/HR divided by (1.08 X (furnace outlet plenum temperature minus furnace inlet return temperature in Fahrenheit)).
    For example:  90,000 BTU furnace output divided by (1.08 x (150°F - 60°F)), or
                              90,000 divided by (1.08 x 90), or
90,000 divided by 97.2 = 926 cfm system heating airflow capacity
