NYSEG Responds to Devastating Impacts of Powerful Thunderstorms
Westchester, Putnam, Sullivan, and Orange Counties Hardest Hit
BREWSTER, NY — May 16, 2018 11:00 a.m. — NYSEG, a subsidiary of AVANGRID Inc. (NYSE: AGR), is responding to damage resulting from the latest band of extreme storms that brought winds recorded as high as 78 mph to the Company’s Brewster and Liberty Divisions. The Company has deployed nearly 1,500 personnel and is hard at work to restore power for the more than 92,000 customers impacted by yesterday’s powerful thunderstorms that pelted the Northeast. Currently there are approximately 68,000 NYSEG customers without power. NYSEG and RG&E personnel throughout the state have been deployed to the affected areas, working alongside Company, contractor and mutual assistance personnel from Maine, New York, Pennsylvania, and Canada.
From the storm’s impact late yesterday afternoon throughout the overnight hours, line and tree crews conducted make safe work, responding to downed wires and other emergencies. Crews are partnered with municipal resources as well as the National Guard to clear impassible roadways to enable travel in and out of blocked areas. Assessment teams, including municipal partners have begun recording system damage, which includes impacts to the transmission and distribution system.
During this phase, NYSEG will work to restore the transmission system that serves the area, which will restore service to groups of customers with no further system issues. The Company will also strive to restore service to critical facilities, such as hospitals, first responders, and emergency centers vital to public safety as directed by local and state
The Company will continue these efforts today to determine the scope of the damage and continue repairs to infrastructure damaged by yesterday’s powerful storm that has again affected the Company’s Brewster Division, serving portions of Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess Counties; and the Liberty Division, serving portions of Delaware, Orange, Sullivan and Ulster counties. Of note, funnel clouds were reported in Sullivan County, Dutchess County saw wind gusts up to 78 mph while Putnam and Orange counties saw winds reach 65 mph and 60 mph respectively.
There are 10 transmission segments that are out in the Brewster and Liberty Divisions along with reports so far of 876 downed wires and 80 broken poles. The public should avoid all downed wires as they may be unsafe. Crews respond to outages systematically with safety as the first priority.
NYSEG offers the following reminders to customers during a power interruption:
- Contact neighbors to see if their power is off. A loss of power could also be the result of a blown fuse or a tripped circuit breaker.
- To report a power interruption, contact NYSEG at 1.800.572.1131 or RG&E at 1.800.743.1701. Our telephone systems let callers report the problem, help our crews respond quickly and efficiently, and provide customers with power interruption updates. Due to a large number of customers trying to reach us during a power interruption, phone lines may be busy. Anyone who has access to a working computer or mobile device during a power interruption can also report the interruption online at nyseg.com or rge.com.
- Listen to a battery-powered radio for weather and power restoration updates.
- Turn off major appliances (electric water heaters, refrigerators and freezers) and sensitive electronic equipment (TVs, computers and audio equipment) to prevent overloading and possible damage when power is restored. Turning off equipment may mean unplugging it, turning off a circuit breaker or removing a fuse for the circuit that provides power to this equipment. Leave one light switch “on” to know when power has been restored.
- Don’t use a natural gas or propane range to heat your home.
- Never use outdoor grills or stoves inside.
- Keep refrigerators and freezers closed as much as possible. Most food will last 24 hours if you minimize the opening of refrigerator and freezer doors.
