NYSEG Making Steady Progress in Restoration Efforts After Powerful Thunderstorms
Estimated Time for Restoration Provided to Remaining Customers Without Power

Customers Urged To Avoid Downed Lines and Report Outages

BREWSTER, NY — May 16, 2018 9:00 p.m. — NYSEG, a subsidiary of AVANGRID Inc. (NYSE: AGR), continues restoration efforts following yesterday’s powerful thunderstorms packing winds as high as 78 mph that inflicted severe damage to electrical infrastructure. NYSEG currently has 1,500 personnel engaged in restoration efforts including company, contractor and mutual assistance line and tree crews from Maine, New York, Pennsylvania, and Canada. More than 98,000 customers were impacted by yesterday’s powerful thunderstorms that pelted the Northeast. There are approximately 49,000 customers that are without power as of 9:00 p.m.

Line and tree crews are working day and night addressing unsafe situations responding to downed wires, compromised poles and other emergencies. Work also continues alongside municipal partners on the state and local level to clear impassible roadways to enable travel in and out of blocked areas.

“Our primary focus is ensuring the safety of our customers, the public and our crews. With damage inflicted mostly in our southern service area, we have shifted personnel to our Brewster and Liberty Divisions,” said Patricia Nilsen, Director of Emergency Preparedness at AVANGRID. “We are working in tandem with officials of impacted municipalities to keep streets safe and clear, as we systematically restore power to our customers as quickly as possible.”

As damage assessment continued throughout the day, the company continued to see reports of additional damage throughout its Brewster Division, serving portions of Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess Counties; and the Liberty Division, serving portions of
Delaware, Orange, Sullivan and Ulster counties. Damage assessment has revealed that there are 1,368 downed wires and 251 broken poles.

NYSEG also wants to remind everyone to stay away from downed power lines because even lines that appear dead can be dangerous. NYSEG offers the following reminders to customers during a power interruption:

  • Contact neighbors to see if their power is off. A loss of power could also be the result of a blown fuse or a tripped circuit breaker.
  • To report a power interruption, contact NYSEG at 1.800.572.1131. Our telephone systems let callers report the problem, help our crews respond quickly and efficiently, and provide customers with power interruption updates. Anyone who has access to a working computer or mobile device during a power interruption can also report the interruption online at nyseg.com.
  • Listen to a battery-powered radio for weather and power restoration updates.
  • Turn off major appliances (electric water heaters, refrigerators and freezers) and sensitive electronic equipment (TVs, computers and audio equipment) to prevent overloading and possible damage when power is restored. Turning off equipment may mean unplugging it, turning off a circuit breaker or removing a fuse for the circuit that provides power to this equipment. Leave one light switch “on” to know when power has been restored.
  • Don’t use a natural gas or propane range to heat your home.
  • Never use outdoor grills or stoves inside.
  • Keep refrigerators and freezers closed as much as possible. Most food will last 24 hours if you minimize the opening of refrigerator and freezer doors.
