Sandy’s Wrath Continues to Inflict Damage on NYSEG’s and RG&E’s Electricity Delivery Systems
63,200 Without Power Across Combined 20,000-Square-Mile Service Area

Rochester, NY – Relentless tropical storm force winds and gusts of up to 63 miles per hour are continuing to cause extensive and widespread damage to NYSEG’s and RG&E’s electricity delivery systems across the state.

“As conditions permit, we are responding to reports of downed power lines to make the situations safe,” said Mark S. Lynch, president of NYSEG and RG&E. “We encourage our customers to stay safe during and after this historic storm and, in particular, we urge them to stay far away from downed power lines that can be deadly.”

Lynch said the first phase of the service restoration process, damage assessment, will begin once the storm passes, perhaps on Wednesday. He said customers in the hardest hit areas should be prepared for a long duration event.

Once NYSEG and RG&E have completed the vital public safety work of responding to known incidents of downed power lines, the companies will:

  • Assess the damage to the electricity delivery system.
  • Develop a detailed restoration plan.
  • Make repairs as quickly as possible.

NYSEG and RG&E have been preparing for this storm for the better part of a week. Front line and support employees have been and are continuing to be deployed to the hardest hit areas, additional contract line and tree crews are on the job, outreach staff is working with county and municipal officials, the companies are making arrangements to distribute dry ice and bottled water in strategic locations, and company representatives continue to work closely with the New York State Office of Emergency Management.

NYSEG and RG&E offer the following safety reminders:

  • Stay away from downed power lines – even lines that appear “dead” can be deadly.
  • Stay out of flooded basements because energized wiring or outlets below the water line may pose a hazard. Natural gas service in a flooded basement may also pose a danger. If a basement or home is in danger of flooding, customers should contact their utilities to turn off electricity and/or natural gas service.
  • Emergency generators can be dangerous. Carefully read, understand and follow manufacturer’s instructions when operating an emergency generator. Never run emergency generators indoors; operate them only outdoors in well-ventilated areas, away from windows and doors, and never in a garage.
  • For electricity emergencies and to report power interruptions, NYSEG customers should call 1.800.572.1131;
